DDF Events

The list of events in Alaska Drama, Debate and Forensics is as follows:

Drama

Group Events

Readers’ Theatre – 2-20 students involved. Twelve (12) minutes maximum. A group presentation in which an open script must be used, either in hand or on a lectern.

Pantomime – 1-6 students involved. Eight (8) minutes maximum. Prepared presentation may include recorded instrumental music but no other sound effects or vocalization. Makeup and costuming are allowed, but not required.

Duet Acting – 2 students involved. Ten (10) minutes maximum. It must be a cutting from a play or screen play. Blocking is necessary. A minimum of props is allowed, but no costumes or makeup may be used.

Duo Interpretation – 2 students involved. Ten (10) minutes maximum. Selections used in the contests shall be cuttings from published, printed novels, short stories, plays, screen plays or poetry. They may be humorous in dramatic in nature.

Individual Events

Solo Acting – Eight (8) minutes maximum. It must be a cutting from a play or screen play. Blocking is necessary. A minimum of props is allowed, but no costumes or makeup may be used. Students may portray only one character.

Dramatic Interpretation – Ten (10) minutes maximum. Selections used in the contests shall be cuttings from published, printed novels, short stories, plays, screen plays or poetry. Dramatic or serious in nature. Students may portray multiple characters.

Humorous Intereptation – Ten (10) minutes maximum. Selections used in the contests shall be cuttings from published, printed novels, short stories, plays, screen plays or poetry. Humorous in nature. Students may portray multiple characters.

Debate

Policy Debate – 2 students per side. This debate format deals with the writing of a governmental policy and the effects of that policy. The current resolution is: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth’s oceans.

Public-Forum Debate – 2 students per side. This debate format deals with current events. The current resolution is: Resolved: United Nations peacekeepers should have the power to engage in offensive operations.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate – 1 student per side. This debate format deals with morals and ethics. The current resolution is: Resolved: Just governments out to require that employers pay a living wage.

Forensics (all individual events)

Extemporaneous Speaking

Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking – Five (5) to seven (7) minutes. Current international topics are selected. The contestant draws three topics, selects one, and has thirty minutes to prepare in a monitored area before giving a speech.

Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking –  Five (5) to seven (7) minutes. Current national topics are selected. The contestant draws three topics, selects one, and has thirty minutes to prepare in a monitored area before giving a speech.

Extemporaneous Commentary – Two (2) to five (5) minutes. Topics are selected by the tournament director. The contestant draws three topics, selects one and has twenty minutes to prepare in a monitored area before giving a speech.

Prepared Speeches

Original Oration – Eight (8) to ten (10) minutes. The content of the speech must be original. The thesis should advocate a change from the status quo.

Expository Speaking – Six (6) to eight (8) minutes. This category requires an original, factual speech fulfilling the general end of informing the audience.
